The first step will be to assemble all of the materials you will need to complete the framing, starting with your picture and the frame you have chosen. Other materials include:

1 - Mat, a thin piece of cardboard, is sort of a “frame within a frame”. It provides an attractive border as well as a separation between the frame and the picture.

2 - A mounting board is a stiff material that holds the picture firmly against the mat.

3 - An adhesive spray is needed to mount your picture to the mat.

4 - A quality mat cutter is needed to accurately and cleanly cut your mat to size.

5 - Making your own frames will require specific woodworking equipment, such as mitres, routers and saws.

Of course, there are many creative ways to frame as well; especially with smaller prints. Materials that would be needed for specialty framing can vary widely depending on the style chosen.

To become accomplished at framing, there are interactive classes that can be attended, websites with tutorials to be viewed and numerous books on the subject that walk a beginner through the process. Having professional training and guidance on the first framing can set the stage for good results with any framing project.

The advantage for framing your own pictures is the much lower cost. Using a professional custom framer provides great expert looking results, but does come with what many people consider to be a rather high price tag. Not only is it less expensive to frame your own picture, but it carries a level of satisfaction and pride as well when the steps are followed to do the service well.

Being appreciative of art often leads to tackling the hobby of picture framing. Picture framing supplies are not that difficult to locate and the process of framing itself can be very satisfying. The result can be a spectacular display of your favorite art in your home.
